A day of blues, nature and friendship: Geraldine, Paolo and I took a boat across Mahebourg’s vibrant bay to walk through l’Ile aux Aigrettes. We expended enough energy for a refill, which we did at Karay Mario’s. This new eatery’s colonial setting is complemented by food our grandmothers made: rougaille, dry curry, vindaloo, gato coco, pawpaw preserve, and a home-made orange liqueur. Apart from the lingering nostalgia of days past, which prompted us to remember the art and love invested in food preparation many years ago, Mario de l’Estrac’s wit and charm kept us yakking until he closed his doors at four.
